Food Shelf in Garretson
In October 2006, a New Life Celebration Church Koinonia Group project was to establish a basic Food Shelf in Garretson, South Dakota. The Jesse James Opera House was the first food site location. Food donations were initially collected from Garretson residents, as well as food drives from NLCC members after Sunday morning worship.
Efforts have grown wit h Garretson churches and local organizations now the prime supporters of the Food Shelf, both financially and with food items. In fact, a gentleman form Washington State, who grew up in Garretson, heard about the Food Shelf and sent a $200 donation.
As the Food Shelf continued to grow, it moved to 640 Main Street in Garretson. It is a larger space and more convenient, as everything is on ground floor. A $1900 grant was received, which allowed for the purchase of a new freezer and a new refrigerator, as well as shelving. Currently, the Food Shelf is helping several local families and that number continues to grow.
Recently, another need was filled. Some local elementary students were not able to participate in the school milk and snack program. The Garretson Food Shelf has purchased the required tickets, so those students will now be included.
Kris Freck is a NLCC member and the coordinator for the Garretson Food Shelf. She says, "I feel we serve the Garretson residents in this vital area. We always need donations and helpers." If you'd like to become involved or for more information, please call Kris at her home at 606-594-3901.
